Who's Your Best Friend?
When talking to another friend, the question, "Who's your best friend?" comes up sooner or later. If you had asked me that question a few years ago, I'd say, "Well, Girl 1 was my best friend for about three years, then I met Girl 2 and we have been best friends for a long time. But I knew two girls from church really well, so maybe they were my best friends? And then I changed churches, and met Girl 3, and we were best buddies for a while, too. Then we grew apart, and she eventually ended up changing churches. Then Girl 2 moved far away. It's been hard for us to keep as close as we did before, but we're still close friends." Get the picture?
Friends are a very important part of life. But people change, we change, and our relationships change. Let me tell you a secret. I know Someone whose relationship with you will never change. He will always be there for you, no matter how hard the circumstances are. He will always fight for you. And He will always, always love you. Hebrews 13:5 NIV says,
"Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
John 15:13 NIV also says,
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
I know Someone who will love you forever and never leave your side - Someone who will hold your hand through hard times and forgive you when you wrong Him. He will "rejoice over you with singing" (Zephaniah 3:17) and calm you when you're feeling down.
Jesus will always be there for you because He's eternal. Exodus 14:14 NIV says,
"The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."
As this verse says, Jesus will always fight for you. John 15:13 explains that Jesus demonstrated His great love for us by laying down His life for His friends - that means me and you - by dying on the cross for us. If you haven't heard this true story before, all men are sinful and deserve death as the punishment and eternal separation from God. But Jesus, God's son and a third of the trinity (God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit), died in place of all the world's sin, even though He never sinned. Because He was the perfect sacrifice, He won back the right for all who believe in God to have a personal relationship with God. God made relationships special and essential in life because He values them. Maybe you've already heard this story and this stuff is old news. But if you have that relationship with Jesus, you'll find that it will never grow old. He is the perfect best friend because He'll never tear you down, abandon you, or stop loving you.
I encourage you to really ask yourself who your best friend is. Does she fight for you? Does she strive to always be a good friend? Does she lay down her life for you? How about you? Are you being the best friend you can? You will never have a perfect relationship with a person because all people are sinful. But Jesus can be that perfect friend because He's perfect. Like I said, Jesus is the perfect best friend you can ever have. If you asked me now who my best friend is, I'd say Jesus. :)
